Inclusive Design in Religious Spaces: A Necessity, Not an Option

Inclusive design in religious spaces is crucial for fostering a sense of community and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can participate in worship and other activities. Religious spaces are places of spiritual growth, community bonding, and cultural preservation. Making these spaces accessible to all is a marker of strong moral senses. While the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) excludes religious organizations and spaces from its requirements, it still serves as a guidepost for how to make accessibility happen in those buildings. We’ll discuss the importance of accessibility in religious spaces, the ADA guidelines relevant to these locations that can help create mobility inclusion, and how EZ-ACCESS® products can make these changes a breeze.

The Importance of Accessibility in Religious Spaces

  • Promoting Inclusivity and Community: Religious spaces are often the heart of communities, where people come together over common beliefs and support one another. Ensuring that these spaces are accessible to everyone is vital for promoting inclusivity and community cohesion. When religious facilities are accessible, they send a powerful message of respect to individuals with disabilities, reinforcing the principle that everyone deserves equal participation in spiritual and communal activities.
  • Enhancing Spiritual Experiences: Accessibility enhances the spiritual experiences of individuals with disabilities by removing physical barriers that might prevent them from fully engaging in worship and other religious activities. For instance, accessible ramps and seating arrangements ensure that everyone can access different areas of a religious facility, including the sanctuary, fellowship hall, and classrooms.
  • Considering Legality and Ethics: Beyond the moral and community-building aspects, providing accessibility in religious spaces is not a legal requirement under the Americans with Disabilities Act. However, as a culture, we should always find ways to invite others to participate in our spaces, including religious settings. Lacking accessibility solutions can undermine a religious organization's reputation and ultimately goes against the nature of inclusivity embedded in most religions.

ADA Guidelines Useful for Religious Spaces

The ADA sets forth guidelines to ensure that buildings considered places of public accommodation are accessible to individuals with disabilities. While religious organizations have exemptions under the ADA, many choose to voluntarily comply with these standards to foster inclusivity. Partnering with an ADA advisor will help identify any specific areas that need to be addressed with guidance on how to best serve the needs of your congregation. There are several key ADA guidelines religious spaces can leverage to improve the environment:

  • Accessible Routes: Religious spaces should have accessible routes connecting all facility areas. This includes pathways, wheelchair ramps, and elevators that are wide enough and designed to accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Consider typical routes individuals may use to go from one area to another, and be sure to consult with members of the congregation who use assistive devices for their input.
  • Entrances and Exits: At least one accessible entrance and exit should be provided, featuring a wheelchair access ramp that is no steeper than a 1:12 ratio of rise to run. Handrails should be present on either side of the ramp for additional support and safety. As points of egress in the event of an emergency, ramps and other accessibility features ensure the ability to safely evacuate the area.
  • Seating and Altar Access: Accessible seating should be integrated throughout the facility, including spaces close to the altar or stage to allow full participation in services and events. For any activity the congregation would participate in, be sure those with mobility devices can reach the necessary spaces.
  • Restrooms: Restrooms should be accessible, with features such as grab bars, accessible sinks, and adequate turning space for wheelchairs. Even the seat height of the toilet should be considered. The features and layout should take into account whether the bathroom is a private room or has multiple stalls.
  • Parking: Designated accessible parking spaces should be provided, with clear signage and appropriate dimensions to accommodate vehicles with mobility equipment. Sufficient space needs to be included alongside designated handicap parking to provide room for loading and unloading of mobility equipment including wheelchairs.

Even though religious organizations are not mandated by law to comply with all ADA standards, many choose to do so to create a welcoming environment for all members and visitors. Through the community, religious organizations will often get funding for accessibility equipment and partner with local organizations to perform the installation. EZ-ACCESS has over 1,000 partners throughout the USA who are skilled at installing our products. By adopting these standards through whatever means possible, religious spaces can demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity and respect for individuals with disabilities.

The aluminum build is resistant to corrosion and is quick to install thanks to the modular design. Paired with the PATHWAY HD Code Compliant Modular Access Ramp, congregants will have no problem getting on raised stages for choir or making their way into the building.
  • TRANSITIONS® Angled Entry Mat: Oftentimes, doorways or joined rooms have a ledge or threshold that is not even with the ground, creating a barrier to mobility device users. The TRANSITIONS Angled Entry Mat offers a gentle slope that bridges the gap, reducing trip hazards and delivering a smooth pathway. Made of recycled rubber, this entry mat is naturally slip-resistant and suitable for both indoors and outdoors. Available in 1.5” and 2.5” heights, the TRANSITIONS Angled Entry Mat is lightweight and trimmable to perfectly fit a doorway.
